Pat Knight

It’s been a long time since we posted, and we’re very sorry for that.

We’d intended to get active on our Blog again as soon as we got back to our island home in November, but Spirit had other plans. We returned to find that our dear friend and neighbor Patrick Knight’s health had taken a turn for the worse, and he was becoming quite ill. The responsibility for his care had fallen to his dear wife Trena who was also struggling to keep up with the very heavy holiday season demand for her cakes and pies. Deerspirit and I were able to step in and help out. At first it was just delivering cakes and pies and taking Pat to clinic appointments, but, as Pat’s condition became progressively more grave and he had to take to his bed, we shared in his care to the best of our abilities.

Trena’s whole family flew in from Nassau, Ontario, Abaco and Seattle and gathered at the house for a few days in late December. Trena’s daughter Julie remained in Exuma to help her mother. Her son Ed flew back in from Abaco when Pat’s condition began to require 24 hour care.

It’s so rare in this day and age that a person gets to spend his final days at home with family and friends, and we’re so blessed to have been able to help make that possible for Pat.

Pat was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church and had donated many hours of his time to the maintenance and improvement of St. Theresa’s Parish in George Town, Exuma. On Sunday, February 6 Archbishop Patrick Pinder, having learned of Pat’s condition, took time from his busy schedule to fly to Exuma, visit Pat and administer the Last Rites of the Catholic Church.

Pat passed early on the morning of February 12, 2011.

Ordinations

We’ve been too busy to post for a while. Here’s why.

For many months now Deerspirit and I have been working hard to complete the requirements for Ordination as Ministers of The National Spiritual Alliance, and on October 16 we were formally ordained at the Alliance’s Thompson Temple in Lake Pleasant, MA.

We were both presented for ordination by the Reverend Spencer Stremlau, and the Ordinations were performed by the Reverend Cori Lovering, who ordained Lorraine, and the Reverend Betsy Newton who performed my ordination ceremony. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank The National Spiritual Alliance, Cori, Betsy, Spencer, all the mmebers of TNSA who’ve been so supportive of us, and to all of our friends and relatives who took time to travel to Lake Pleasant to celebrate this wonderful milestone with us.

We’re now back home in our little cottage at Cutbeach, The Cut, Little Exuma, Bahamas, and we’ll be staying here for a while now while we catch our breaths and figure out what comes next.

Seashells and their messages from the Universe

Living here in the Bahamas has added another dimension to the way I receive messages from the universe.

Just before we left for the Bahamas five years ago a group from our psychic gathering visited the home of a lady who does seashell readings. She has hundreds, maybe even thousands of shells from all over the world. She’s found that each shell has a meaning depending on the life and habits of the sea creature that created the shell. That night I fell in love with the beauty of all her shells and the excitement of messages from the sea.

Until I’d been to Shelly’s house (yes, the seashell reader’s name really is Michelle, “Shelly”) I’d been aware of many different ways to get messages from the universe but had never once thought about messages from the sea or its creatures. Although I’ve loved the sea my whole life, and I’ve always felt closer to God while I was on the sea it never occurred to me that there was more.

Whenever we get a chance my husband and I go snorkeling and to try and find some more lovely shells. When we do find new shells I am always very excited. If I know the meaning of the shell I take time think about the message the shell is giving us. If I don’t know the meaning of a particular shell I go home and look it up in Shelly’s book Ocean Oracle.

There have been a few times when my husband and I have been out snorkeling and each of us has found identical shells. A couple of times we’ve come home, looked up the meaning and learned we’d both found an uncommon shell, rare and considered very hard to find. Yet each of us found the same kind at the same time. This happened to us again just recently. Only this most recent time the Angular Triton shell that we’d each found wasn’t in the book. We wrote to Shelly and learned that she doesn’t even have that shell. She’s meditating on a meaning for it. As I write this, we’re patiently awaiting for her to share her findings.

These days I spend hours and hours cleaning shells, making them beautiful for family, friends and ourselves. I love the energy of having seashells all around our home. I love it as much as I remember loving being in the mountains with the deer and wildlife all around me. All God’s creatures have messages for us if we pay attention, quietly listen and stay in tune with the Universe. I’m glad I have been given the opportunity to learn the messages from the sea. I am truly blessed.

A lesson from Spirit

Hurricane Igor passed over Bermuda last night, and Julia’s moved out to sea. Here in the Exumas there’s not a breath of air, not enough breeze to flutter a single leaf, but the sea is churning terribly. The reef is covered by the white foam of breaking waves. Spray shoots twenty and even thirty feet in the air when those waves reach the rocks on our North and East shores. Our lovely beaches are being completely rearranged. The shells of recently dead sea creatures are washing up on the beach, and vast quantities of fresh seaweed, violently uprooted from the sea floor, are making their way to shore… all this chaos under a crystal clear blue sky, white puffy clouds, and not a sound to be heard save the pounding of the waves, not even the normally ever present rustle of the tops of the tallest palm trees.

As I sat at my desk this morning I watched the sunrise. There wasn’t a single cloud in the east, so the whole sky just seemed to glow with shades of bright red, then reddish orange that gradually turned to pale yellow. At last the sun finally appeared over the tops of the palmettos on the Eastern ridge, and the whole sky turned to blue. As beautiful as the morning’s awakening had been I couldn’t help remembering the old ditty “Red sky at morning, sailor take warning.”

Though the nearest storm is over a thousand miles and moving away, and our little island seems an oasis of serenity, we’re still affected. Spirit’s sent a lesson this morning.

We need to be aware of every little disturbance we might cause, for the ripples of energy we send out can have far reaching effects.

Spirit Guides

Have you ever had the feeling that you intuitively knew how to deal with an issue, only to realize that nothing in your experience had provided you with the wisdom to come up with such an insightful approach to the problem. Perhaps you had help. Maybe you had help from a Spirit Guide.

When someone whose body’s died and who’s crossed over makes a decision to offer guidance to a living person he or she becomes what’s often referred to as a Spirit Guide. There are also those who claim that some guides are higher beings who may not have ever existed on the Earth Plane, and other folks claim to have been guided by animal spirits.

Sometimes a Spirit Guide will apparently commit to guide one person for a very long time, often years, decades and even for a lifetime. Then there are occasions when a Guide will appear, pitch in and help out with a single perplexing issue and never be heard from again. I have several friends within the Spiritualist community who’ve been able to identify their Spirit Guides. Some have been able to do so in meditation, some have seen them in visions or dreams, and others have been able to use astral travel , lucid dreaming and numerous other techniques. Many of those friends have maintained a close relationship with the same Guide ever since they first became aware of a guiding presence on their lives. Personally I’ve met a number of Spirit Guides when they’ve made their presence known to me in meditation or sometimes in visions, and many times I’ve assumed that they’d be with me for a long time. Alas, I’ve yet to meet any one Guide more than once. That’s not to say they weren’t guiding me, perhaps one or more of them are still with me, or maybe they each appeared in response to a particular need, did what they came to do and then moved on. I don’t know how or why the right guide always appears, but I’ve no doubt that they do.

A surprisingly large percentage of the folks who’ve described their Spirit Guides have spoken of Native Americans, ancient Egyptians, Tibetans and Saints. personally I’ve been guided by a medieval philosopher, a humble blacksmith from colonial America and even my own departed ancestor.

The bottom line, in my humble opinion, is that there are as many variants of the Human/Spirit Guide relationship as there are humans.

So, how can you find out how you knew the answer to that question which should have baffled you? If you have a friend or mentor who’s a Spiritualist, give them a call and ask for guidance. If you don’t know anyone like that perhaps you know a psychic you’re comfortable with and who’s experienced and qualified to lead you in a guided meditation. Perhaps you can find books and tapes on meditation. There are a whole lot of good resources available once you go looking for them. Of course I have to add that there are also a few unscrupulous shysters who’ll be happy to drain your bank account while promising you answers to complicated spiritual questions. Remember, if it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t right for you (even though it may have been right for others.)

Hi all. Sorry we haven’t posted anything new for a while. I’ve been off island trying to assist a friend with a very difficult problem, while DeerSpirit’s been left alone to help the cause from our home base. I’m back now and plan to post the long promised second installment of “Should we fear spirits?” as soon as I get caught up with the many little things we have to do to carry on on an island. You should hear from me as soon as the water tank’s full, there’s gas in the boat, and…

Our friend and I wish to thank DeerSpirit and her friends, particularly the Medicine Woman in Vermont, for all their prayers and guidance.

Is everyone born with a gift?

Everyone is born with a gift

If we’re all born with a psychic gift how is it that so many grow up to be either unaware or so afraid to admit they’re gifted?

Questions like that are asked of me all the time.

I think about how I should answer that, because it has been so hard for me to come out of the psychic closet for so long.. not because I was unaware or afraid of my gift, but of what I
thought other people would think of me. I let other people’s opinions, feelings and judgments keep me from growing into the spiritual being I knew I was capable of being.

Also, the visions and messages I received were not always good. Sometimes I didn’t want to know the things I was seeing, hearing and feeling. I fought it and fought it until I finally had the courage to face the things I did not want to know. I learned that I’m only the middleman, relaying messages from my higher power to the people they are for, and that it is my spiritual journey while I am here for this lifetime.

So how does one go about learning how to find his or her gift, or to fine tune the gifts they are aware of?

Here are some suggestions:

Take meditation classes and learn how to quiet your mind and body.
Read all you can about spiritual and psychic development.
Take classes any chance you can on psychic techniques and varieties of psychic tools.
Give yourself time and realize that it takes as long as it takes.
5. Don’t compare yourself to any other psychic because everyone’s gift is different.

Should we fear spirits?

Every day we see shows on TV about Ghosts and hauntings and so called scientific investigations of hauntings. Then there are the shows like Ghost Whisperer. They’re terrific drama, but their fictional portrayal of ghosts and spirits is often so overdone that the reader is left with the impression that every ghost is a terribly dangerous being capable of and anxious to strike terror in the minds of unsuspecting victims.

Perhaps there are such spirits about in the world, but I’m of the opinion that the vast majority of spiritual encounters are quite benign and fall into one of two categories.

The first is the spirit that somehow failed to cross over to the other side when the body died. This can happen for a number of reasons. I’ve encountered spirits who wanted to wait for a loved one in hopes that they could cross together. Some others want to linger to be close to their loved ones who’re still living. The reasons are many, but the bottom line is the same. They stayed behind because of what seemed like a good idea at the time. Unfortunately those “good ideas” seldom work out well. Many spirits linger for years, decades, and even in some cases centuries waiting patiently for a loved one to pass, so the two spirits can cross over together. By the time we encounter them their loved one has most likely long since crossed over with no idea that the first spirit hadn’t already done so. For instance, I once encountered the spirit of a gentleman who’d come to America in the 1620′s and eventually settled in Chelmsford, Mass. When I found him, or rather he found me, he was still waiting patiently by his grave for his wife pass so they could cross together. Imagine his surprise when I pointed out his wife’s headstone, right next to his own. I encouraged him to go to the light, and then I got to witness him turn around and climb the steps where his beloved wife was standing at the edge of the light with hand outstretched to guide him into the light.

The second type is the spirit who’s around to guide the living. More about that in a later post.
